Supporting Kuwait’s growing demand for reliable power supply

December 20, 2017 - ABB Gas-insulated switchgear to strengthen the Capital city’s power grid

Located on the Arabian Peninsula bordering Saudi Arabia and Iraq, Kuwait has almost 10 percent of the world's oil reserves and is one of the most densely populated countries in the Middle East.

The government promotes a diversified and sustainable economy growth initiative, called “Kuwait vision 2035”. This goes hand-in-hand with the National Development Plan (NDP) which aims to deliver adequate infrastructure for the country. This includes investments to strengthen urban development and reliable electricity and water supply for the country.

ABB has been awarded a contract by NCC, a local engineering, procurement and commissioning (EPC) company, to deliver 300-kilovolt (kV) gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to Kuwait City’s Al-Ardiya substation operated by the Ministry of Electricity & Water (MEW).

The GIS will enhance grid reliability and support power supply to develop residential and industrial areas in the north-west of the capital city. The project is scheduled to be energized in 2019.

“ABB is our partner of choice based on our excellent long-term relationship and good experience in the implementation of high-voltage projects in GCC countries," says Ramani Krishnamoorthy, General Manager, NCC, T&D, Kuwait. “ABB has offered us the best solution fitting to our needs and requirements.”

“We are proud to contribute to Kuwait’s electricity development plan”, says Giandomenico Rivetti, Managing Director of ABB’s High Voltage Products business unit, a part of the company’s Power Grids division. “Our proven GIS solution is designed to enhance grid reliability with minimized footprint and lower environmental impact”

In a power system GIS controls and protects the network from failures and avoids power outages. The GIS is the ideal product to facilitate reliable energy supply and can be safely operated in confined spaces and harsh environments. ABB has always been and continues to drive innovation in GIS technology and provides a complete range of products for all ratings and applications from 72.5 kV to 1200 kV matching current and future requirements for modern switchgears. As a market leader in high-voltage GIS technology, ABB has a global installed base of more than 30,000 bays.
