When visitors arrive at Bangkok’s new Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand they enter one of the most creatively lit and energy-efficient airport terminals in the world. At 563,000 square meters (more than six million square feet) on nine floors, it is also the world’s largest.

At 563,000 square meters (more than six million square feet) on nine floors, Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand is the world’s largest airport terminal. Lighting is controlled, monitored and optimized by an ABB intelligent installation system.

The lighting system for the entire terminal – including the 460 check-in counters, 27 baggage carousels, 260 passport control and transfer counters, and 120 gates – is controlled and monitored by ABB i-bus® EIB/KNX, one of the most widely-used intelligent building installation systems in the industry.

The customized solution manages some 17,000 lighting circuits and enables the airport operator, Airports of Thailand, to create and control optimal lighting scenarios for this vast complex and the 120,000 passengers who are expected to pass through it every day.

The installation is in turn powered by a comprehensive chain of ABB power and automation products and systems that were selected by the airport’s designers and engineering consultants, MJTA, for their ability to meet stringent specifications for reliability, safety, total cost of ownership and energy efficiency.

They include all the low voltage products (including circuit breakers, switchgear systems and control products), all the medium voltage gas insulated switchgear, all the medium voltage transformers, and the four power transformers in the airport’s high voltage substation.

Thanks to its extensive local presence in Thailand and network of manufacturing facilities in Asia and other parts of the world, ABB was able to meet the challenging delivery schedule and enable the airport to open in time for the tourist high season.

ABB’s scope of supply includes:
  • ABB i-bus® EIB/KNX
  • 4 units of 60 MVA 112/24 kV power transformers
  • 148 units of 24 kV dry transformers
  • 52 panels of 24 kV ZX2 gas insulated switchgear
  • 800 panels of MNS low voltage switchgear systems
  • Complete package of automation products including circuit breakers, drives and control products
