ABB secures USD $11 million transformer order in Kuwait

2009-08-03 - ABB transformers to enhance power quality and reliability of main power plant in the country.

Dubai, U.A.E – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has secured a USD $11 million deal with Kuwait’s Ministry of Water and Electricity (MEW) to supply power transformers as part of an upgrade project for the Doha East power plant. The order was booked in the second quarter.

Located 15 km east of Kuwait City, the Doha East power plant is one of five main base load plants serving Kuwait. The upgrade to the plant aims to help new residential areas cope with the considerable population growth in country.

“ABB’s extensive experience in transformer technology will help the Ministry of Water and Electricity strengthen its power transmission in Kuwait,” said Ammar Assadder, marketing and sales support manager for transformers in MEA. “Enhancing grid reliability is one of our company’s key goals and we’re pleased that the Ministry has selected ABB for this important project.”

As part of the agreement, ABB will supply a number of transformers (with ratings up to 188 mVa) from its factories in Italy and Spain. The new units will be installed and operational at the power plant by early 2011.

Transformers are integral components of any electrical grid, and are a critical element in the efficient and safe conversion of energy across diverse voltage systems. ABB’s transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1000 kV, dry and liquid distribution transformers as well as related services and components.
